The Imraguens’ great catch

The Imraguens’ great catch

The Imraguen, a population wedged between the Mauritanian desert and the Ocean, await December to make the best catch of the year. They scan the ocean from the beach, watching out for schools of mullets. The minute they spot the fish, two men plunge into the ocean and beat the water with long sticks. They are calling the dolphins head in, swimming closely together towards the coast, forcing the fish towards the beach. Trapped, the mullets surge upwards, out of the water, to avoid the men and the dolphins. Only very few escape.
